Cool Tools for School Leaders

Course Title

Description

Evaluating Technology Use in the Classroom Need to gain an understanding of what to look for in a 21st Century classroom? This course offers school leaders an opportunity to gain insight on how to evaluate teacher’s use of technology in their classroom (NETS-T Standards). Instruments such as guidelines and rubrics will be provided to participants to aid in using formative assessments to evaluate teachers’ use of technology.
Communicating with the Community (School Blogs) Learn how to effectively communicate with the community through the use of a school blog. This course offers instruction on setting up a school blog through the use of Blogger, discussing strategies to facilitate and maintain a school blog, viewing examples of schools using blogs for communication.

Podcasting for Administrators

 

Learn the basics of the iPod-- This session will walk you through loading podcasts, videos and more to an iPod. This session will also outline the very basics of podcast creation and show examples of tools and give resources to the school leader who wants to begin their own Podcast! iPods will be provided or you can bring you own!

Crunching the Data (Best Practices using Excel)

 

Crunching the data couldn’t be easier with the help of Excel and the DUG (Data Utilization Guide). This session will demonstrate how school leaders can quickly navigate data using Excel as well as appropriately plan for AYP and their SIP (School Improvement Plan). Quick tips and strategies galore…to assist in working smarter, not harder!

Webkinz Using the virtual world of Webkinz in the classroom engages students in a positive effort to become active participants in the 21st Century Classroom.  All academic subject areas are addressed, with a focus on economic decision-making and critical thinking.  Students will learn computer skills in an educationally responsible format.
To Infinity and Beyond...using Thinkfinity In this session, participants will take a close look at the GeorgiaStandards.org website and the new interactive resource called Thinkfinity. Participants will  learn how to integrate rich technology resources to meet the new Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). In addition, participants will be given time to search and play with the resources!
Marzano and Web 2.0 Explore Web 2.0 tools and strategies such as blogging, wikis, and other web-based interactive tools that align with and support research-based instructional strategies in the classroom! Participants will learn about specific Web 2.0 tools that can be used by teachers, and strategies that can be used with those tools to align with and support research-based effective instructional methods. In this day of high-stakes testing and frequent complaints from teachers that they “don’t have time to use technology” in the classroom, this course seeks to bridge the gap to help teachers see that technology doesn’t have to be an add-on that distracts them from focusing on the curriculum.
Make the Upgrade! (Office 2007) Are you ready for the new version of Office? Well, ready or not it is here! This session will show you the ins and outs of the new features of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Great Googley Moogley! (Google Tools) It's time to go beyond simple searching with Google. In this session you will learn how to use several of the new and powerful applications from the Internet's leading provider of searches.

Digital cameras are an accessible technology that can truly capture students! Learn many ideas for using the digital camera across the curriculum and what to do with those pictures once they are taken. Participants will get hands-on experience with free photo editing and showcasing programs.
Get ACTIVE with the ACTIVboard! Come learn about a technology that is sweeping the state of Georgia! This hands on demonstration focuses on the Promethean ACTIV Board, one of the leading brands in interactive whiteboards. Learn how ActiviStudio 3's tools and enhancements engage students and enrich the classroom experience.
Get SMART with the SMARTboard! Come learn about the newest technology when using interactive whiteboards. Participants will be provided with classroom resources, shortcuts, and tricks of the trade using the SMARTboard in the classroom. This course teaches the basic beginner use of the SMARTboard and Smartboard software. BE SURE NOT TO CONFUSE THIS WITH INTERMEDIATE SMART COURSE DESCRIPTION BELOW.
Beware of the Blogs...NOT!

Run, don't walk...it's the blog - user-generated Web sites where entries are made in journal style. Participants will create blogs using Blogger, view examples of educational and classroom blogging, and discuss educational uses.
Wonderful World of Wikis! Wiki means quick, and you can quickly create a wiki Web site without knowing any programming/html, etc. Participants will create a free classroom wiki at PBWiki, view examples of educational and classroom wikis, and discuss educational uses.
United Streaming: Resources on Demand! Come explore the plentiful multimedia reference tools that United Streaming has to offer. More than a digital media library, Discovery Education "unitedstreaming" provides teachers with the tools to incorporate fresh, vibrant digital media into student learning environments - quickly and easily.
Hook Me Up!
(Connecting Hardware Devices)

Need to connect a digital camera to a PC or get a video projector to display correctly?  How about some help connecting USB devices and getting drivers working as they should?  Know a teacher or student who needs help hooking up a wireless network?  In this session, you will get hands-on experience with technology commonly found in the classroom and at student and teacher homes.  If you plan to attend and have a specific issue you would like addressed, please email the instructor at brent@speakwisdom.com.  

Podcasting! Podcasting has become one of the best ways to deliver audio and video content to your listeners, be they students, parents, or community members. Many people believe that podcasting belongs only to the Apple users of this world. PC users take heart! Using very simple tools such as Audacity and Feed4All, podcast creation is open to all regardless of what platform they are using. You don't have to have a  Mac or even an iPod for that matter! This session will outline the very basics of podcast creation and show examples of tools and give resources to the participants so they have the tools to go home and begin exploration on their own.
Nip it in the Bud!
(Technology Troubleshooting)

Classroom technology can be a pain! This session will focus on simple steps you can take to get technology working and keep it that way.  We will focus on PC hardware and software issues, as well as troubleshooting printers and video projectors. Anyone Can Be a MovieMaker! In this session, students will learn how to create movies with Movie Maker. This program is EASY and best of all it's, FREE. Topics will include: capturing videos, adding video effects, transitions, sound, inserting audio clips, and publish to the Web.

In this session, students will learn how to shoot video with the new Ultra Flip Camcorder, the video equivalent of a Kodak point-and-shoot camera! This new “gadget” is so simple, you will “flip out” over its ease of use. Just flip it on and it’s ready to start filming in about three seconds! Plus, it comes with its own USB arm! No wires or plugs to keep up with – the only one provided is one that plugs into your TV! You can even upload the videos to your very own Web site, blog, or wiki from the camera itself. Join us in this session to create short videos to publish on the Web or to save to a CD.

In this session participants will learn how to create movies with iMovie.  Topics will include:  capturing videos, adding effects, transitions, sound, narration, and DVD authoring.

 

Get SMART2: Intermediate SMARTboard In this session participants will take application from the first Cool Tools, Get SMART, and apply it to integrating the SMARTboard, and SMARTresources into their curriculum. Participants will also be able to use the Airliner (Wireless Slate) and the Senteo (Classroom Response System "Clickers").
Where In the World? GEOCACHING Looking for a little fun and excitement? Look no further than Geocaching. It's like a scavenger hunt using hand-held GPS devices. Participants will gain an understanding of the basic principles of geocaching: GPS devices, geocaching website, and complete an actual geocaching hunt.

**Participants please be aware part of this course requires walking around part of the KSU campus. You will want to dress accordingly.

Clicker Pickers(Classroom/Student Response Systems "Clickers") Want to learn how to use formative assessment techniques in your classroom? In this session, participants will gain an understanding of what formative assessment means and how to use it in their everyday lessons.  Participants will also be provided with information and demonstration of multiple classroom response systems being used all over the state of Georgia (Turning Point, Quizdom, E-Instruction, Activ Votes, Senteo)
Get Activ - Intermediate In this session participants will explore some of the new features of ActivStudio 3 - inserting video placeholders, action objects, containers, and more!
iPod Unleashed Using your iPod is easy and fun. This class will walk you through loading music, podcasts, videos and more to an iPod. iPods will be provided or you can bring you own!
Ready, Set, Action! In this session participants will learn how to use online photo sharing websites to store, edit and share photos.  Students will also create a motion video using still photos.  Bring 10-15 pictures of one event (birthday, wedding, anniversary, etc) on a pen drive to class.  A movie will be created with these photos.
Social Networking 101 Do you Twitter, Pownce or Jaiku? Do you prefer Facebook, MySpace, Hi5, Okrut, or Bebo? Perhaps you have a profile in LinkedIn? In this class, participants will learn some of the more popular social network web sites. You will learn about all the positives and negatives of these web sites.

iLife Participants in the class will have hands on experience with Apple's iLife 08 Suite. These programs have incredible uses for the classroom and they are provided by Apple for free with the operating system! 
GarageBand: not just for teenagers anymore! Audio and video creation is a breeze with Apple's GarageBand! This class will give participants and great foundation for the use of GarageBand!
Get it Right with Interwrite This course will introduce you to the Interwrite suite of hardware and software products. You will get hands-on experience with the Interwrite interactive white board, the Interwrite teacher pad, Student-response system, and the Interwrite software suite.
