The Educational Technology Training Centers (ETTCs) are proud to announce the pilot of the Georgia Movie Academy (GMA). The Georgia Movie Academy is a state-wide competition that encourages the use of basic and/or advanced video production in classrooms. The GMA invites teachers to register for the competition, form teams of motivated students, and serve as coaches through the development of an educational movie aligned with state standards.

The GMA was inspired by the outstanding Mabry Middle School Film Festival. Mabry's Film Festival is a school-wide movie production competition that culminates in an Academy Award ceremony hosted by Mabry's very own Middle School students. It is an impressive model for the integration of technology and is in the spotlight on the KSU ETTC Web site for the month of September.

Policies and Procedures for Coaches/Teams

A coach must be a teacher, librarian or other professional staff member providing instructional services to Georgia students. Coaches serve as guides instructing students in the use of movie development software and offering advice on content and design.

Coaches are responsible for forming a team of students, completing the team registration process, and providing guidance and assistance during the movie development process. Coaches must have an active e-mail address for regular communication with the Georgia Movie Academy contact(s).

The Georgia Movie Academy will accept movies developed on any software program and/or any platform. Teams and coaches new to movie making are welcome and encouraged to enter the Georgia Movie Academy. The KSU ETTC offers a Movie Maker Class that is perfect for beginner coaches!!! No previous skill necessary! Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to learn!

Coaches are able to bring a team of students to a Movie Maker workshop offered by the KSU ETTC.  Student teams must be accompanied to the workshop by their coach. Parents are welcome to attend as well. Click here for teacher and student workshop dates and registration.

To enter the Georgia Movie Academy competition, registration is required. Coaches are responsible for the timely completion and submission of the Georgia Movie Academy registration packet. The packet includes:

  • Team Registration Form

  • Registration fee of $50.00 per team

  • Policies and Procedures that must be read and signed by the coach

The registration packet should be submitted to the KSU ETTC as soon as a team is formed. Registration packets postmarked after February 1, 2005 will not be included in the competition.

Grade levels are divided into three divisions:

  • Division 1: Grades K-5
  • Division 2: Grades 6-8
  • Division 3: Grades 9-12

Coaches may coach a team in any division. However, students must compete within their division. Team members are allowed to attend different schools within the state of Georgia. Team members must be Georgia students in grades K-12 and meet eligibility requirements according to state/local standards.

A team must consist of 3–10 students and no more than two coaches. Individuals are not allowed to enter the competition due to the emphasis on project-based learning. If a team falls below 3 members, the team is subject to disqualification. Coaches are strongly encouraged to form teams that include at least 4 students. A team that falls below 3 students should notify the Georgia Movie Academy staff via e-mail and file a GMA Withdrawal Form. No refunds will be given.

A coach may coach multiple teams; however, a student may participate on only one team. Coaches must distribute parent permission forms to their team members. It is the responsibility of the coach to keep a copy of the parent permission form on file with the school.
